The Next Economy works across all economic sectors to accelerate the transition to a climate-safe, regenerative and socially just Australian economy.

Partnering with critical regions: Our collaborative, place-based approach with regional partners facilitates action, fosters two-way learning and demonstrates what effective and inclusive economic development looks like in the transition to net zero.

Connecting regions with resources: We link regions with the expertise and resources needed to advance economic priorities while building capacity to implement initiatives for timely, sustainable change. We work with public and private investors to engage directly with regional-led projects and plans.

Supporting leaders: We support leaders across government, industry, investment and community with skills, experience and networks to manage the transition well.

Inspiring broader action: We elevate stories, voices and insights to expand national support for, and understandings of what is possible through, the transition to net zero.

Shaping policies, processes and systems: We provide strategic insights and timely advice to decision makers to shape the policies and investment and regulatory frameworks that create the conditions for systems change.

“Input from such a diverse group of people/organisations was exceptional. Positive outlook on opportunities was refreshing.”

Meet our team

We pride ourselves on attracting people with experience and expertise across all sectors at the intersection of climate, social justice, community development, policy and economic change.

Our history

The Next Economy was established in 2018 in response to a growing number of requests – from community, industry and government leaders – for support to strengthen regional economies as they navigated growing disruptions and challenges.

The requests echoed similar and compounding issues, from climate impacts to shifting energy systems, threats to regional livelihoods, worker and service shortages, and cost of living pressures – all in the context of increasing social polarisation around the need to transition to net zero.

Over the years, a critical question consistently emerged: ‘What does good economic development look like as we mitigate and adapt to climate change?’

Over the past seven years, The Next Economy has responded to these requests.

The team has, and continues, to:

  • Work directly with regions to build capacity and undertake planning for transitions
  • Bring together key stakeholders to work out how to manage the transition in ways that minimise risk and maximise economic benefits
  • Work closely with industry and governments to shape policies and frameworks to better support regional areas to manage the transition – while supporting regional voices to do the same
  • Shine a spotlight on the importance of regions to the national economy and in working with decision-makers to build real solutions together

Impacts and achievements

Since 2018, The Next Economy has partnered with regions holding the key to Australia’s transition to net zero emissions.

We have helped create the conditions for systems-level change by demonstrating how it is possible to manage change in ways that strengthen social, economic and environmental outcomes.

We have supported leaders across government, industry and community organisations to manage the impacts of the transition to net zero and a changing climate.

By sharing what we learn, we have supported evidence-based decision making and encouraged broader public support. Together, this has helped build momentum for a rapid, responsible and fair transition.
